In July 2005, my sister was diagnosed with a 6.7 cm AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) in her brain. An AVM is a tangled mass of blood vessels that are at risk of rupturing. From January-March 2006 she underwent 6 brain surgeries to remove most of it... but since a small portion was pressed against her brain stem, the doctors felt that surgical removal was too risky, so they did radiation surgery on it. Radiation can provide good results, but it can take up to 3 years for the full effect to take place. We were told that during this time, she was still at risk of a hemorrhage. After her surgeries, she returned to school, graduated with her class, and over a span of 9 months, made a full recovery. Then on December 19, 2006, a vein in her brain burst. She spent 3 1/2 weeks in the ICU, and another 5 months in a rehab hospital. Since her hemorrhage, she has had 16 additional surgeries... 22 in all. It's been a year and 1/2 since then, and every day she makes small improvements. She cannot walk, so she is confined to a wheelchair. Even throughout all of this, she has remained the funny, positive, amazing girl she has always been. She is the most amazing person I know. **UPDATE** Lizzie will be having her 23rd surgery on September 16, to remove the radiated brain tissue and to remove the remaining AVM.
